GENERIC NAME: ACYCLOVIR - TOPICAL CREAM
BRAND NAME(S): Zovirax
USES: This medication is used to treat cold sores (i.e., oral herpes) on the face or lips. This medication may also be used to treat genital herpes. This medication does not cure herpes, but relieves the pain and may help the infection clear faster.
HOW TO USE: Begin using acyclovir as soon as signs of a cold sore or genital sores occur. Signs of a cold sore include tingling, redness, burning, or itchiness. For external use only. Wash your hands with soap and water before and after applying this medications. Clean and dry the affected areas before applying the medication. Apply to all sores as directed by your doctor. Apply enough cream to adequately cover all sores. Do not use more often or for longer than prescribed.
If applying to genital herpes sores, use a finger cot or rubber gloves to avoid spreading the infection. Avoid applying in the eyes, nose, or inside the mouth. To prevent from washing off the medication, do not bathe, shower, or swim right after applying it. Do not apply other skin products (e.g., drugs, cosmetics, sun screens, or lip balms) .
