Can I use Avamys all year round? I have rhinitis medicamentosa and start using it for a year. I don't use it everyday but I use it when I have blocked nose (a few days in a week or every second week depending on the season) although I use it everyday in hayfever season. As it is steriod, is it safe to take it all year round? If I plan to have a baby next year, is it necessary to stop using it now?
Fluticasone for inhalation has been assigned to pregnancy category C by the FDA. Animal studies have revealed evidence of teratogenicity when corticosteroids are administered orally or potent steroids are applied topically. Fluticasone has been shown to be teratogenic when administered subcutaneously at high doses to mice. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy. Fluticasone is only recommended for use during pregnancy when there are no alternatives and benefit outweighs risk.
This information is more regarding the asthma inhalers but nasal conrticosteroids are also absorbed.
