I am scheduled to have aortic valve replacement next week and will be diciding what type of valve to use0 mechanical, or pig or cow.
Since alcohol acts to thin the blood, be very careful when on coumadin. I am on coumadin for an aortic valve replacement (mechanical valve, July 2005). I drank two beers a few years ago one night and tested my blood the next day and it had greatly thinned it and made the INR out of range. I stay away from it entirely.
I also am on Coumadin for life due to a blood clotting disorder called Factor 5 Leyden and I also recommend staying away from alcohol and that comes straight from my hematologists (blood specialist) recommendations to all his patients. Alcohol does thin the blood like Coumadin and Aspirin so please for your safety don't combine them, you may be o.k. once but I wouldn't recommend it especially 2-3 glasses. Safey first when it comes to meds. Let us know how the surgery goes will be thinking of you, good luck.
