i was diagnosed with UTI by a registered midwife based on my urinalysis when i was 8 months pregnant and was recommended amoxicillin 500mg 3x a day for 7 days and took it and my vaginal itch was gone. now that my son is 4 months the itch came back again, so can i take amox again? if so how many times a day and for how long? 250 or 500mg? is it safe for my baby? because i a breastfeeding him. should i have another urinalysis? i did not see a doctor yet due to some financial problems. thanks.
Amoxicillin is excreted in breast milk in small amounts. Penicillins may cause diarrhea (due to disruption of GI flora), candidiasis, and skin rash in breast-feeding infants. Unless the infant is allergic to penicillins, breast-feeding is generally safe during maternal penicillin therapy; the infant should be observed for potential effects. As with all drugs, the potential risk to the nursing infant should be considered versus the potential benefit in the mother.
