i have noticed that my grand ma, when given diltiazem in excess of doctors suggested dose, her blood pressure goes high. is there a threshold level where it can be most effective?
Can diltiazem increase blood pressure when taken in excess of recommended dose?
Added 6 Feb 2010:
my grand ma is 90, half body paralyzed of stroke, and has been on blood pressure medication:
metoprolol 50mg twice a day
diltiazem 30mg twice a day (8am & 3pm)
diltiazem 120mg (time-release capsule) before bedtime (8-9pm)
digoxin 5mg once daily
is it safe to give extra diltiazem in between times when it is supposed to be taken? during the night, when her blood pressure is elevated before taking the 120mg diltiazem, is it correct to give additional 30mg in addition to the 120mg right at one time?
You should follow the instructions your doctor gave your mother. If you are unsure speak to your mothers doctor or nurse.
Diltiazem doses vary widely depending on the reason for its use and the patients health. Doses of up to 360mg daily or more may be required. Talk to your doctor.
