Dear j, welcome to the site. Others have written here from other countries saying asking something similar, so apparently it is a problem worldwide. I goggled it and on the website for the national headache foundation it says that only the suppository form is now available. Recently we have also seen questions about another medication that is similar, called esgic plus. Esgic plus is caffeine, butalbital, and acetaminophen. Perhaps this will work for you if you can obtain it. It is an rx and you may not be a be able to simply order it. Try calling yur pharmacist and ask if they carry it and are able to get it, then ask your dr if he/she will prescribe it for the treatment of your headaches. I used to use it for muscle tension headaches and my dr did explain that it does constrict the blood vessels and that is how it relieves the headache. In Wikipedia.org article, the cafergot is described as doing the same thing. You could look both cafergot and esgic plus up in wikepedia for more info. Good luck, patti
I have used Canadian Pharmacies for cafergot and dihydroergotamine. The cost was about a 3 months to what one month cost in the states. I get several Rx filled there still, if it reduces my cost.
They have not had the cafergot (suppositories and tablets) for some time now. Recently my local pharmacy has been unable to supply them also.
I just found a compound pharmacy who can make the suppositories. So perhaps that is an option. Again the cost was about a third of what the Migergot cost. I hope you can find a more palatable solution.
The dihydroergotamine comes in ampules. I use them for very advanced migraines. My wife is trained to give them to me as an IV. It saves a trip to the hospital emergency room. And is only a fraction of the cost. Plus you don't have to argue with the ER doctor to get it every time you go in. (For some you can just give a shot in the glutes, and it aborts the migraine. But I need the IV.)
I used ergotamine tartarate (Cafergot, Ergodril) for about 20 years and few years ago it was DISCONTINUED in Australia and I believe in most western countries. I suppose the reason for this is because long usage has serious health consequencies.
Does anybody know more about possible reasons for it ?
