Well I went to my doctor to see about help with anxiety. I got prescribed bupropion SR because I also wanna quit smoking. When I got home, I read bupropion is to treat depression, nothing about anxiety. I believe if it doesn't help anxiety, then it beats the purpose because my depression feeds of my anxiety's. At least I feel like. So I was wondering if I could get a little help on understanding exactly what bupropion SR does, and if it truly will help my anxiety.
Hi, Jake. Good question! Actually, all the newer antidepressants (atypicals, SSRI's and SSNRI's) that are commonly prescribed for depression also act as anxiolytics. So you're getting two for the price of one. Best regards and good luck with your treatment. Wildcat
Hi Jake- Wellbutrin (Bupropion) is not an SSRI or SNRI. It is in a class all it's own. It is not know for its anti-anxiety qualities. It can be excitatory and can make anxiety increase. If your depression is from your anxiety as you say, then there may be better choices for you. Try it and see if it helps you. You can always talk to your doctor about other options. Hope it all works out for you.

Yeah WB can make you anxious for sure. My cousin takes Prozac along with WB in order to help a bit with his anxiety.
Buproprion is a DRI: Dopamine Reuptake Inhibitor, among other things. It's well know for its very small side effect profile, helpfulness with motivation issues related to depression, and use as a smoking cessation aid. Aaaaaand that's it.

Actually, Wellbutrin is an "NDRI" - (norepinephrine-dopamine re-uptake inhibitor). This means it increases the presence of the neurotransmitters norepinephrine and dopamine.
