I am 1 week postpartum and I am breastfeeding. I would like to continue to breastfeed while I still take my risperdal. I stayed on the medication during the whole pregnancy and was advised to check with my doctors while I was pregnant about my medications and breastfeeding. I was told it was fine, but when I had the baby a couple of the doctors were unsure and I took the baby to the doctor today and the doctor says he would prefer to switch to formula. But if I wanted to continue breastfeeding that I could and that he would just like to see the baby in couple of weeks to check for development. I am looking for some advice on what I should do keep breastfeeding or switch to formula? I know what studies they have conducted are few and from what they gathered there was no developmental defects or there isn't a lot of risperdal in the milk.
*Taking antipsychotic medication during the last 3 months of pregnancy may cause problems in the newborn, such as withdrawal symptoms, breathing problems, feeding problems, fussiness, tremors, and limp or stiff muscles. However, you may have withdrawal symptoms or other problems if you stop taking your medicine during pregnancy. If you become pregnant while taking this medicine, do not stop taking it without your doctor's advice.
Risperidone can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Do not breast-feed while taking this medicine and for at least 12 weeks after your treatment ends.*
