I am suppose to hyrdoxyzine to help treat hives. I am nursing my 4 month old daughter. Breastfeeding is well established. Is it safe to take this prescribe medicine? My doctor told me not to breastfeed, and I would hate to throw all the "good stuff" down the drain.
This drug can be secreted in your breast milk and could potentially oversedate your baby. If you need to use the drug, then you should continue to pump and discard the milk because it is no longer "good stuff" when it has a potentially harmful drug in it. From the literature:
Hydroxyzine Breastfeeding Warnings
There are no data on the excretion of hydroxyzine into human milk. The manufacturer recommends that due to the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants, a decision should be made to discontinue nursing or discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother.
You dont need to completely stop nursing, just pump and discard the milk until you no longer need the drug. Once you discontinue the drug, give it 2-3 days of more pumping before you resume feeding your baby to be sure all the drug is out of your system.
