with codones i itch then get little red bumps then scratch the heck out of the
You might be able to take Demerol. Some people who cant take one kind of opioid can take another but some people are just allergic to any kind of opioids so it is hard to say. Itching is a side effect of opioid medications though. It is due to the histamine response caused by opioids. It is not an allergy. If you are itching, then getting bumps as a result of scratching them you are NOT allergic but having a side effect and ALL opioids do this to some extent-some more so than others and the hydrocodones and oxycodones are some of the worst offenders for many people. It can help to take an antihistamine with them to help with the itch. Demerol should not be used for chronic pain. If you have chronic pain then demerol is NOT the drug to use. Chronic use can lead to toxicity. The body breaks down meperidine into normeperidine, which builds up with repeat doses. This substance may cause confusion, delirium, and seizures. It can also lead to serotonin syndrome when given with antidepressants so it is not a good choice for chronic pain. If you have chronic pain and you have itching with the"codones" you may try morphine. Morphine may not cause the severe itching that the codones do.
