... tests. Its all really frightening, especially as a relative had the condition and eventually developed dementia like symptoms. Can anyone give me any info or advice please? Im not even sure which support group i should join
Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause anemia as everyone knows.
But it can also cause neurological symptoms by interfering with odd chain fatty acids metabolism.
These can range from mild ones to sensory and motor impairments, decreased reflexes.
If anyone takes B12( hydroxocobalamin) before appearence of such symptoms, he is completely safe.
But those defects of the cns that have already occured cannot be reversed with B12, it just prevents their further progression.
U don't have any such cns effects, so u will not get them in future if u start taking BI2 soon.
Can understand your anxiety to know about the ailments, treatments etc., you could read more on: http://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/vitamin-b12-deficiency-anemia-topic-overview & http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000574.htm, which would perhaps give you a lot of information & you shall also be able to relax & then decide to also join a support group for info & discussions.
Take care & above all be well!
