I got the Depo shot December 27th and have been having extremely heavy bleeding I have endometriosis also and have been bleeding extremely heavy for a week now is this normal or not
Everyone reacts differently, but it's not uncommon to have heavy bleeding. Your bleeding can be irregular until you've had 2 or 3 shots. For some it settles sooner.
You will need to be monitored for iron deficiency, if this goes on longer than a few weeks.
If it continues longer than 3 shots, then it's not the right method of contraception for you.
Depo Provera convinces your body it's pregnant. You can experience any symptoms you might get from pregnancy, once settled onto the Drug.
From leaking breasts to severe lower back ache, as your pelvis expands for the growing 'baby'.
The Manufacturer does not advise you are on it for longer than 2 years.
They say if you have no other choice, then you should take breaks every 2 years. This is due to the longer term health risks of Depo Provera, such as your bones thinning, causing osteoporosis.
The Manufacturer advises that if you have no other option for contraception, that you have an MRI scan after a significant time of being on it, to check your bone density.
When you come off Depo, it can take up to 18 months to regain your fertility. Even after just 1 shot. Everyone is different.
I'd recommend taking a good quality calcium supplement to try to limit or prevent bone thinning, one that contains both magnesium & vitamin D in the correct ratios, so that you absorb the calcium into your bones.
Painful sexual intercourse is possible whilst on Depo Provera. It affected me in that way.
