I don't know whether to take the outer circle or inner circle of pills when I am on my period and just starting out.
What do the directions say about when to start the pill? It should tell you when you start the first one. It would be the one that has the most pills of that color, you want the active pills. Then you keep taking them, all the way through the pack and start another pack, no matter when or if you get your period. After the first pack you just keep following with pills, when you stop one pack, you start another.
Whatever color has 21 pills is the active pills, most likely the outer ring. You start the pill by taking one active pill the day your period starts (or the first Sunday after the day you start your period, if you want to be a Sunday starter), one active pill per day for 21 days, then take the inner ring for seven days, this is the week of inactive reminder pills and during this week you should have your period. You may have spotting or breakthrough bleeding during the first few months. Dont pay any mind to this as far as your pills go. Eventually the spotting will stop and you will regulate out. Keep taking one active pill for 21 days then the 7 days of inactive ones.
Be sure to use condoms as a back up for at least the first seven days, or better yet, the whole first pack to be absolutely certain you are protected and can rely on the pill to protect you against pregnancy. You start with the active ones the first month, on either the day you start your period or the first Sunday after you start your period, this first pack. Once you start the first pack, pay no mind to when you bleed or your period as far as taking the pills goes. Just keep taking one pill a day, taking the 21 days of active pills then take the 7 days of inactive ones. The first pack is the only time you worry about starting on your period. The rest of the packs, just take them in order. Eventually your period should come during the week of the inactive pills. It may not start the very first day of inactive pills, it may be the second to the fourth inactive pill before you start to bleed. This is normal. Start your new pack after you have taken all seven inactive pills no matter if your period is done or not. Does this make sense to you or are you still confused? Please write back any questions you have. This sort of thing is something they should have educated you on in the Drs office. Because we get so many questions like these, I think they do a poor job of educating you girls at these offices and clinics!
