I started taking Microgestin Fe 1/20 on June 29th (Monday) at the very end of my period (it started the Wednesday before), which was when my doctor told me to start taking them. The manufacturer label and my doctor told me that it is effective after 7 days of perfect use. Is it less effective the first month you take birth control than the other months? Also, would it be okay to have unprotected sex during week 4 (placebo) of the pack on the first month?
The manufacturer says you are protected after seven days BUT the manufacturer also recommends that you start either Day 1 (within the first 24 hours of your period starting) or the first Sunday following your period. I think since you began the pack within 7 days from the start of your period, you will be safe after seven consecutive days of active pills. Once you are safe, you are safe, as long as you are consistently taking the Pill. It works be preventing ovulation. If no egg is released, there can be no pregnancy no matter how many sperm are present. You are equally safe the first month as any, in your case. If a woman starts her first pack beyond more than 7 days after her period starts, she cannot be as sure that she didnt ovulate and in that case, I would recommend back up protection for the first month. You started close enough so you should be okay after the seven days. You are protected all month, even during the placebo pills, if you took the active pills correctly the week before.
