... I plan on calling my doc tomorrow, but wanted to hear other people's opinions/experiences. I take both medications already, but I was having morning panic attacks. My doc told me I could either take more neurontin in the morning or move my Zoloft med from bedtime to morning. So, I started taking some more neurontin in the morning and although the panic is gone, I feel like I'm in a fog the whole day. It sort of feels like I'm mildly dissociating which feels horrible. I guess I'll try moving the Zoloft to the morning instead and see what happens, but I'm just curious if anyone is familiar with this sort of situation.
Bipolar Disorder - Does anyone know whether Zoloft or Neurontin treats anxiety more effectively?

Hi Sunflower012, I've heard of neurontin being used "off label" for anxiety, and I know of one person who has had success with it. Yet, if it makes you feel 'dissociated and in a fog' you really need to tell your doctor about that unpleasant side effect. I take it for pain, and do not notice any anxiety relief nor a change in mood.
May I ask how long you've had the panic attacks? If it has been a short amount of time, you may want to try something like Ativan, which will not give you the dissociated feeling, I'm certain. Ativan belongs to a class of medications called benzodiazapines, like Xanax or Klonopin, Valium. Any of those will help your panic attacks, if used short term. Long term use is not recommended because of addiction factors. My own opinion is that benzo's are addictive because they work! No need to ever increase the dose as well.
But abuse of benzos has caused doctors to be gun-shy to prescribe, which is such a shame, as people in your shoes could benefit greatly. I may get barked a new hair-do for my opinion, but so be it!
Best wishes to you,
Thx everyone! I have Ativan, but it didn't seem to be enough. Panic has been short term although general anxiety has been my whole life. I tried Zoloft in the morning today and so far so good. I know psych meds don't always fix problems right away. It's hard for me to be patient when I'm miserable, but I've been through this sort of thing before. Again, thx for all the replies! :)
Hi Sunflower. I agree with what everyone else is saying, but I did want to say, that Neurontin is being reexamined as someting to use in treatment of bipolar disorder, anxiety or GAD and in use for pain as well. They are doing studies and have'nt come to a solid consensus, but their studies are showing that it is'nt effective enough for these uses.tejas129
I take both Zoloft and Neurontin for
my depression/anxiety. I take a small
amount of Neurontin in the am with my
zoloft and a larger amount of Neurontin
at night to help me sleep. It is a great
sleep aid. For extreme anxiety, my
doctor gave me Xanax to be used
only on an as-needed basis which
helps tremendously. It I took too
much Neurontin during the am I
would be asleep most of the day
but it does help with my anxiety.
The one that makes you in more of a fog, take earlier in the morning, and give yourself some more time to sleep. Or, start taking it only at night. I take Saphris, and if I take it in the morning, I have that reaction. But at night I do not. If that doesn't work, I suggest giving yourself more time to rest and recover. These things have worked for me, I hope they do for you too.
Hi, Sunflower... I know i'm new to this group, but id like to give everyone a word of advice, plse stay as natural as U can w Ur brain chemicals! I was taking Depakote ER n Gaba Pentin n Effexxor n Topiramate n many many more, including some of the older stuff which I tremble presently from now. I list 3/4 of my beautiful long golden hair. And my teeth are basically disrupted. Thank you psych meds. I had a real Dr explain that to me. Now I use herbs. Better for my body. N they work too. But, sunflower, like you, I also suffer w horrific anxiety. Not a Lil bit. I can barely go onto the freeways w my husband driving n I trust him. That's only 1 example. :-) n I don't share easily. I'm trying. i've been using "buspirone 10 mg tablets 4x a day" as a staple, but I also lean on Hylands Stress Relief Tablets. Believe it or not, they work miracles... Just a suggestion. And of course everyones chemistry is different. Talk to Ur dr. take care n God Bless ;-)
Oh, one thing I forgot to mention. Anti depressants actually cause me to have episodes and panic attacks. My suggestion is to try and strictly take mood stabilizers if you are having panic attacks while taking it. That, or anti convulsants. I haven't had a panic attack since I stopped taking them.
I would take the zoloft in the mornings and the neurontin in the evening. I think neurontin is also for neuropathy nerve pain and it helps you sleep. Even, if the directions say take neurontin 3 times a day, I would not do this. It is ususally 100mg. I would just take it at night. Maybe one around 7:00pm and the other two at bedtime. But, i'm not a professional, so ck with your doctor first. Good luck.
