It can have several causes, cardiovascular usually. Its something you'd want to tell your doc about. Cutting down on salt and elevating your feet as much as possible will help.

Can be caused by the valves in your peripheral veins in your legs no longer closing properly. These veins can be closed off fairly easy in an in-office procedure. But first, a visit to your doctor to find out what is causing the swelling. - ElizaJane
