A friend of mine is currently breastfeeding her 1 month old baby & is starting to have trouble with her bi-polar symptoms. She was taking Depakote in the past as this is what worked for her, but is afraid to re-start it because she is fearful of the effects it may have on her baby.
Hi, Sarah! Good for you for your concern for your friend and her little one. All medications commonly used to treat bipolar disorders are present in breast milk to some degree or another, but lithium seems to be the safest of the available options.
It's really a matter of risk versus benefit and the benefit generally outweighs the risk. Still, this is a question only your friend's doctor can answer because he/she knows your friend's medical history and is in a position to monitor both mother and infant.
Best regards, Wildcat
