Hello Margie52 – Treatment of Esophageal Varices can be undertaken by the two options that you are asking about. Usually it is the Dr who decides which is the best option for you. The Dr feels in your case that either one will help. Band ligation is the newer of the two options and is the preferred option in the UK, thus Sclerotherapy has largely been replaced by Band Ligation. And if Band Ligation is not successful other methods will be tried above Sclerotherapy. Both produces are done via an endoscope (a tube with a camera passed down the oesophagus) and take between 15-30 mins. There can be similar post procedure complications (risks) with either procedure but occur slightly less commonly with Band Ligation. May I add not all cases of Esophageal Varices are caused by alcohol consumption – Hopes this helps you, take care.
