I want a medication to treat my bipolar I disorder without gaining weight, which happens with some meds. A medication to treat severe depression as well. Also I want to know the best medication for panic attacks: possibly one that I can take when I feel one coming on?
Hi, dj! To some extent they ALL can cause weight gain in some, not all, people. I've been lucky, I guess, because I've never gained more than a couple pounds ~ which I need! Of the antipsychotics, Zyprexa (olanzepine) is THE worst. Geodon (ziprasidone) is used for BP mania/depression and average for weight, Seroquel (quetiapine) is approved for BP mania/depression and not too bad at all for weight gain.
Lithium carbonate has been the best for me all round. It nicely controls my moods, anxiety and rage (and it's dirt cheap).
Antidepressants are used cautiously in BP as they can provoke manic episodes.
The others will be along shortly to weigh in! Best wishes, WCV
This past summer I had severe depression that left me unable to function and panic attacks! I went on many meds and Lexapro has given me my old self back. I have one side effect and that is sleepy, a lot. I was also put on Klonopin. Was worried about weight gain but my sanity was worth anything. Once you get feeling better your doctor will work with you with your weight, if he does not get another doctor that will!
