There are three OTC medications for the flu that have very few side effects. The first and most important is 12 hour Mucinex Chest & Congestion. The only active cold ingredient in this Mucinex product is Guaifenesin. Guaifenesins soul purpose is to thin mucus from your bronchial tubes.
Also, if you find your nasal passages are blocked do to congestion caused by the flu, I would recommend Simple Saline. This too is available as an OTC medication. Simple saline is a nasal spray that helps clear congestion from your nose.
Lastly, if you have a fever I would also recommend taking a fever reducer such as acetaminophen or Advil.
All three of these OTC cold remedies come with very few side effects & little to no drowsiness.
Lastly, it's always a good idea to tell the pharmacist your symptoms. This way you can get only the cold ingredients you need for your influenza symptoms.
