With a history of lower back pain I am looking for 'at home' exercises that work to firm the abs without hurting or putting pressure on the lower back.
I'm constantly looking for these! For lower abs, I'm careful to tuck a little round/small pillow under my lower back (or hands). I lie on my back, put legs together straight up in the air, like a right angle, _!. Cross ankles, and tighten abs, while lifting bum off the ground, and keeping legs going straight up. Its a very small movement, but gets the lower abs! You can also put a large rubber ball between thighs/knees, cross ankles, and do same movement. For upper, I lie down on large exercise ball, with knees bent and feet on floor, with bum just over edge of ball. Then, I sit up, or do crunches, making sure not to tuck chin, with eyes/head facing up to ceiling & hands behind head. This really doesn't hurt my back. Hard to explain without showing you, but give it a try, if you can figure out! HA! Good luck!
