My father died suddenly five weeks ago and I'm having problems coping, not sleeping, over-sensitive, tearful and little interest in anything. My GP has just prescribed prozac. Is this normal treatment for someone who is grieving?
My condolences on passing away of your beloved father. Prozac is a medication licensed to treat a number of conditions, including depression, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and bulimia. You may have been under depression which is normal, however please seek a second opinion always better, your GP although is the best person to give you medical advice. Hope you come out of the situation that you are in, God bless!
I know exactly how you feel. I am so sorry about the loss of your dad. Rajive is right about a second opinion. You will be able to cope someday with his passing. When my dad passed on, it took me 2 weeks just to bring myself to the doctor. He prescribed valium to help my anxieties. Really though, time is what will help you the most. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
I don't know your age but I lost my mother at 18 and father at 23 - drugs were not prescribed for grief and I just 'lived thru the pain" and I think I recovered faster than putting off the inevitable. That was a long time ago and I think it depends on the person you are grieving for. Parents are expected to pass on - if my children ever died tho I would need to be medicated forever and probably beg to be in a coma!! I know it is overkill but this too shall pass. We always miss them but that horrible heart wrenching pain only goes away with time.I don't think there is a drug on earth that can help grief, maybe delay it and sometimes we need a little help for a few weeks to get back into living so everyone knows their situation. I can hardly remember my parents now and I do feel sad for that however, I have some old home movies and I think I will get them out and have a look. My thoughts are with you.
