Have majority of usual urinary dfficulties associated with this condition. Been on Flomax for 4 months with no significant improvement and returning to urologist soon. Tending towards surgery as the best option? I am 66 yrs old.
Are you asking us if surgery is your best option?
There are still other effective medications which you haven't tried yet. These include drugs which lower the levels of hormones produced by the prostate. Drugs name are finasteride and dutasteride. They can be taken along side Flomax. These drugs can reduce the size of the prostate gland, increase urine flow rate, and decrease your symptoms. Again it can take 3 to 6 months before you notice an improvement.
Your urologist is the best person to discuss your options with.
My father had extremely large prostate. It was so large that trans urethral resection was impossible. He needed an incision for removal of prostate. A very small part of prostate was left in . He had BPH, not cancer. He lived to age 97. That small part left, grew back the prostate, so many years later he had to take Flomax. If I were facing surgery for BPH, I would ask the doc to remove all of the gland.
