Have you been under the care of a pain specialist? Or are these meds prescribed by the surgeon? I understand you wanting off the opiates. If it's any comfort, you've been on a relatively low dose for only 2 years. When did you have your surgery? Did they use a bone graft as well as plates and screws? Did they use the Harms Cage? Did they do the incision from the front or back? A lot depends on the procedure. How far does the fusion extend? Sorry about all the questions, but it will help knowing how to best ween off the opiates. I'm wondering why they would take you off the morphine and put you on the patch. It's usually the other way around as the Fentynl is much stronger than the 60mg morphine. Of course that's only my opinion as I've been prescribed both at one time or another. Whatever you do, do NOT go cold turkey! And yes they have meds to help you come off the opiates. The most helpful is benzodiazapine. It will help with some parts of wd's. If you wouldn't mind giving a few details, maybe I could help you more??
Hey James, Yes there are meds to get you off the Morphine. This is called opiate replacement therapy. Check out methadone ( for those who are always going to be in pain) and suboxone. You can look on this site, and also on YouTube.com for videos. I am on suboxone and it works. You can also google the Thomas recipe opiate withdrawal and read the article ( diary) Thomas wrote and follow his recipe. It contains over the counter meds and herbal supplements he used and how he felt each day. There are some other meds used that I am not familiar with. Suboxone has a home page with info and a list of doctors in your area licensed to prescribe it. A doctor does have to have a special license to write for it but there are alot of doctors who can. The medicine clonidine is also used to help get someone off opiates.
