I'm using my pain meds, muscle relaxants, heat packs alternating with ice (but mostly heat because it seems to feel better-ice seems to increase pain more), lidocaine patches, stretching, etc. but NOTHING is helping!! I'm going back to the PM Dr and the chiropractor on Thurs. Anybody know any other tricks I can try until then? I'm about at my wits end! The pain has been so bad this past month. I think I'm getting tolerant of this dose I'm on currently but I'd rather not take any more medicine but I may talk to the doc about a rotation. I've got to do something. I cant stand this much longer! :(
It sounds like you are doing everything possible to aleviate the pain. This may not be an option if you are working but water helps me. I have a huge sunken tub in my bathroom and when my pain is excruciating I lay in the tub with the water pretty hot. Even better if you have the option of a jacuzzi with the jets to really relax the muscles. I think the medication rotation may be a good option to explore with your PM doc like you mentioned. I am so sorry you are having so much pain. You are such a valuable member here and your answers are always right on and very informative. I wish I had more wisdom to impart. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers and hopefully some of our other wise ones will be able to help you more. Take care sweetie.
Much love and healing thoughts -Terri-
Sorry your hurting today... the good news today is almost over and tomorrow is a new day. I suggest to take your medicine and a hot shower or bath. Did you try the arthritis ointments. Sometimes they create a burn or cool sensation which might help the pain a little. Do you take sleep meds? Let me know. Take a short walk if you can bare the pain... liz
I am so sorry to read about you. I understand. I have the same conditions also and I have bad days and then really bad days. After I take my pain meds and do the tub and I still have pain levels that makes me mad I have one thing that I rely on and it may seem trivial but it can help. I force my mind to concentrate on something. Doesn't matter what but it should be something that you like to do be it board games with a family member or maybe walking the dogs it doesn't matter what just something that can take your mind off the pain long enough for the pain medications to step in. I know that sometimes nothing can help and on those days I may find myself pinching myself to make my mind feel something different that the pain I am in. But I also take oxycodone for breakthrough pain as my pain specialist calls it. I may on occasion take an extra pill but I don't take more than I am supposed to take within a day. Maybe you can get something for the flare ups. Good luck to you.
Is this the worst pain ever? If it is go to the hospital... maybe it's something different than usual pain. Where do you live... I know with me personally the weather can affect how my body feels.."my shoulder has flared up bad since yesterday... I have tried everything and nothing has helped. I'm sad for you... you ave helped me so much... I hope I helped a little..email me back if you need anything... liz
Sooo Sorry you're going through this. I feel like I'm in the same boat as you alot. I am on Fentanyl patches, muscle relaxers, the packs, and I also take naproxen too. But I have lower back issues, OA in my knees really bad, and suffer from Fibromyalgia. Some days I just feel like I can't take any more pain. It's ridiculous. Like TLC mentioned (and my hubby preaches it to me), the hot bath's and soaking's does help alot if we will take the time to do them. I promise. They will help temporarily anyways. I wish you the best of luck and nothing but Peace and happiness. Love, Ruth
I am so very sorry you are in pain , but you are doing everything possible to lower the pain. I just want you to know that it affects me not being able to give you a helpful answer, but you are are doing everything right as I previously said, I agree with Liz a warm bath perhaps might help.
Come on you are strong, a winner, a woman of valor do not let the pain beat you, you got to somehow get out of the hole.
Dzoobaby you are in my thoughts and in my prayers.
Hey Dzoo, I know what you mean! My back has been killing me too, altho the oxycodone does help better now that I finally got the Mallinkrodt brand. I usually take a tylenol with it a couple of times a day, but kiddo, you might have to rethink the surgery route if it doesn't get better. I think I told you my sis inlaw had hers done down where you are, & completely gone! Pain is over with that she suffered with for years! I can get the docs name if you want let me know. Wish I had some better answers for you... Mary
Hi Dzoo - first my deepest sympathies. I'm into hot baths as many others are but I add either Epsom Salt or this herbal mix I disvered on a cruise & buy online. Was very skeptical about it, (came w/ an oil & get for after bath) but it actually helps. Also have a routine of 6 different yoga poses I go through but it sounds like you know ur streches! Sorry sweetie, all I have left is I *don't* recommend throwing anything breakable or punching a wall. Didn't seem 2 help me too much :-) Wish I had something better 4 u - u deserve it! If u want 2 try the herbal stuff, I'd be glad 2 give u the url. Getting ready 2 meditate - will be sending u light & love!
Terri took the words right out of my gob, I was going to add water therapy as well. It might help.
You sound as if you are indeed tolerant of your meds and need a change of some sort. I feel for you. Are you able to increase anything to alleviate the pain? I hope so!!
Love to you and yours,
I'm so sorry Dzoo! I've been there too, sometimes nothing helps. I agree with everyone who mentioned water therapy and/or a hot bath. I also have a Boston Scientific neurotransmitter. I had it implanted 3 years ago. It's been a Godsend. It takes away 75-95% of my nerve pain. It can be used for any part of the body.
One other person mentioned trying to think of something else. That can really help. There is an excellent book written by Doctor John E. Sarno, The Mind-Body Connection. I think you all should read it. It helps me immensely with my pain. It's a bit dry but it's worth reading. Just like imagining a "Happy Place" to help with pain, our brain controls our body's pain. Many times more pain = stress, stress causes tension in the muscles which = more pain. I wish I could gift this book to each and every one of you.
I'm sure that you have been to the doctor by now, but I just wanted to add that possibly you are not putting the TENS unit in the right place, and that is why it exacerbates your pain. If you can't get a PT to help you (with your back, it is really hard to place yourself), try a partner, or friend. the leads have to criss cross each other, and they have to be placed ABOVE the pain level, not on it. The idea is to give your brain only ONE signal to feel, and hopefully the gentle electricity given off by the TENS unit is what you feel. Also the unit has several different types of choices for what you feel. Some don't feel great for some people while, others feel better. This is why a PT would come in very handy. If you can't get an appt.. with a PT, at least call the company up where you get the supplies. They might be able to help you with placement and choices of surges (for lack of a better word).
I really hope that you find the answer as to why your back is getting so bad, and that you are able to control the pain better. But really, most people don't use the TENS unit correctly. (I'm not saying that you don't), and that is why it doesn't help them. I just had surgery to place an SNS permanently, and some people compare it to a TENS unit though there is NO comparison AT ALL. It is quite a different feeling, and much more choices, literally thousands, to find the best that works for you. My trial was a miracle, and now I am waiting to heal so that they can turn on this machine. I would have never gone though this surgery if I didn't think that it would work. The trial is very minimally invasive, so you might want to try it. If it doesn't work, no harm done!! (unless you have no insurance, then harm done :P )
Good luck, and please, let us know how you are faring since the doctor!!
