they're only worried about if I want pain meds which would be nice but I want to know what is causing this and treat it. Why are they been so difficult?
Do you pay for your ins? ( smart arss comment coming) then he works for you. You pay his bills do you need to be more firm on what he is doing for you. If not talk to the management team turn him in to the medical board and get a new doc.. You and you alone are your own advocate.. Remember the saying a squeaky wheels gets the grease!!! It took me a year going through 7 neuro surgeons to finally get one to listen to me and my primary doc about me needing back surgery...
What are your symptoms?
When my back pain started I was in so much pain I went to the ER. They had to do a CT scan right then and there. That is one option for a quick answer. Otherwise most doctors like to try prescriptions and maybe physical therapy first. If that does not work, cortisone shots. Then you eventually progress to x rays. Then maybe an MRI and possible surgery after everything else does not work. I understand trying the least invasive first. Sometimes it's about money and health insurance coverage. I read an article about this saying basically everyone wants an MRI and a quick fix these days and with back pain and migraines there is no quick fix, just treatment.
Bottom line is you want to know why you have pain and you deserve to know. So try another doctor, maybe a neurologist . Or just go to the ER if the pain is severe and you want an answer now. Like others have said , you have to take charge and be persistent in your health care.
While I don't have an answer persay, I wamted to tell you, you are certainly not alone..I have asked for my mri to be reviewed by a specialist other then my primary(holy HMO!) I would check with customer sevice about the referal process and appeal to your doctor once again for the referal to a neurologist and back specialist(not a chiropractor, my opinion since it hurt my back further). I wish you all the best and hope that I may be able to seek the same! Take good care of yourself in the meantime.
