... needing to take between 3 and 4 lately because 2 is just not cutting it. I am nervous to ask my PM doctor for either an increase to oxy 10mg or an increase the dosage to oxy 5-325 4/ day. With all the new laws out there I don't want him to see me as a drug seeker or have suspicions. Any advice?
I agree with kaismama. Just tell him either the pain meds are either not working or not lasting long enough.then ask him what he suggests? Leave it at that and see what he says. I had to tell my doctor a while ago that my pills don't last 8 hours. So I was switched from 3 a day to 4 a day. If you have a good doctor he will try to help you. His job is to help manage your pain, right?
The proper way to have done this would have been to let him know right away that 2 were not cutting it and let him okay taking more. You did self medicate and if he wants to, he could give you a hard time. Just be honest with him and let him know that you were in a great deal of pain. Be apologetic if necessary. I have had this happen a time or two in my many years in Pain Management and I would stress on it all night before an appt worrying, like you, that I might be cut off etc. It is terrible to have to be in this position! Most of the time, it has not been a big deal. I did have one or two Drs who made me feel like a kid at the Principals office and I had to be a "perfect" patient for a few months after to regain trust and prove I wasnt abusing my meds. Once was after having 4 wisdom teeth pulled!! Most of my docs have understood but it just depends on the doc.
If they are waiting for an excuse to get rid of you as a patient, they can use this to do so. I have learned if I have a flare and the meds arent covering me, to go in right away and tell them I'm having a lot of increased pain and I'm starting to use too much medicine and this gives them a chance to intervene before I have taken a months worth of meds in two weeks. You'll have to be very careful in the next few months because they will be watching you. Hopefully it wont be a big deal. 2 Percocet a day is not very much and really neither is 4! I wish that is all I needed to get by!
It may sound odd but what I had to do to stretch out my oxy's was I would take my normal does, then when I was in more pain for the normal does to help I would take a Benadryl. If I was able to sleep it would help with the pain. Then every once in awhile you can take a double does. The best thing is to tell them ASAP it's not working. Do they have you on an anti inflammatory or a muscle relaxer?
