I started Avonex 14 yrs ago, at that time I was told to have the injection in the buttocks which was very convenient as my husband could do this. 10 yrs ago I was told by a help-line that Avonex should never be administered in the buttocks, arms and legs only, which is less convenient as it means going to a health centre. Now at my health centre a new nurse tells me that it is perfectly ok to have the injection in the buttocks and that is where she administers to other patients. Please help me clear this up. Thanking you in advance. Eileen Lincoln.
Are you using the pen? You really can't do that in the butt unless you're skinny because it won't get to the muscle, with such a short needle. It has to be given in the muscle. When common sense was over ridden by the idiocy of one size fits all needle sizes these things happen. There is no reason your husband or yourself can't be taught how to give it in the arm or leg. Actually that is a safer place for shots then to have a layman sticking needles near the nerves in the behind. Avonex has nurses to come teach you that. I know because I was one of them.
