... very new to all of it could you help and tell me whats the best thing I can do to help him, do we medicate? What helps with all his headaches, listening ect! It would be nice to hear from others going through the same, thanks:)
Hi Bec, I'm a bit confused. I am a former special education teacher, and I dealt a lot with children with auditory processing problems. I'm not sure about the headaches, unless there is too much stimulation coming in, and he is getting headaches, and in that case, I recommend earplugs, and reconditioning. The reconditioning would be to slowly introduce him to sound, (using earplugs that feel like earbuds, the earphones on an MP3 player), and start playing very soft classical music. I probably would pick a children's album or something that he picks out that he likes, but it has to be slow and very quiet. This takes time. Then I would add different types of music, and I do mean slowly. This can take years if it is that severe. In the meantime, keep the earplugs in when he is bothered. You can purchase these wonderful 3M ear plugs online, very reasonably. Then, with true auditory processing problems, you have to think about the educational aspect, which I'm sure you have already had to deal with. He has to integrate his auditory, visual, and sensory modalities to help him learn. That is how all children learn, using different modalities. Play music, (softly), while finger painting. iPads have wonderful "3D books" for children, which have interactive pages on them, while someone is reading a story, children can read along, and they can slide pictures across the screen to have them do fun things. There is a wealth of information on modality teaching out there.
I hope that this answered your question, as it wasn't very clear exactly how he manifests his problem. Best wishes to you and him!!!
