My 5yr old son was just prescribed Strattera (non-stimulant) has anyone had any experience with this medication before? I was doing some research on this and it says it's not recommended for children under 6. Plus he can't take a "drug holiday" ... I was thinking about telling the dr. We want to try focalin (stimulant) first. Everything I've read said children should be started on stimulants first?
I'm sure your research needs to be considered in your decision. Since no one is answering you who's had experience with Strattera, I can tell you I answered a question from a Mom who's young child on Strattera exhibited stimulant side effects. I looked it up and found these side effects were from the Strattera. I suspect the "non-stimulants" are often acting similarly to stimulants.
For instance, under 'For Healthcare Professionals', this is written: "Cardiovascular side effects reported in adult placebo-controlled trials have included palpitations (up to 4%), tachycardia (fast heartbeat)(3%), increased heart rate, and increased blood pressure". I realize this is a study done with adults, but children with ADD or ADHD aren't going to react very differently for the most part. Then you can read the Nervous System side effects and you will see what I mean. It's not the same as a stimulant, but there are similarities. Here's a link to all side effects, with 'For Healthcare Professionals' being listed after 'For the Consumer.' Link:
I hope this helps you make a decision.
