...cut to the chase:
My recent calcium score of 219, all in the LAD, prompted me to get serious about reversing/treating my apparent beginnings of heart disease, at age 59. High familial lipid history with one early heart attack in my father.
Plus, though I am very active, I have noticed that I have not the stamina I had just a couple of years ago.
I started atorvastatin, which I have read is one of the quickest acting drugs against the soft plaques that are the real danger, over and above the hard plaque that show up in a CT scan.
Have also changed my diet pretty radically.
Question: Is it possible that the atovarstatin 40mg could actually start reversing the soft plaque build up so fast--two weeks or so--that I can actually feel myself feeling stronger...like I can do more and exert more strenuously that I felt I could just a couple of weeks ago?
Am I just imagining this?

Thank You "pamee." I reposted on the site.
I suppose its possible as with lipitor it does start working in 2 weeks. If this is what's happining consider yourself fortunate as most people who take statins are more likely than those not using the drugs to experience an increase in fatigue after mild physical exertion and/or an overall decrease in energy. Talk with your doctor as he would be able to answer your question better than me or anyone as he knows you and your health history.
OK Thanks
Actually the jury is still and my question quite theoretical, beyond the generally improved feeling.
On my last time with statins... last winter... I quit taking them because I thought that they begin making me lose weight.
So, overall, I am not sure.
But it seems plausible to me, a layman, that if Atorvastatin starts clearing soft plaque with some efficacy, that I might then feel a boost.
Normally I work out quite intensively. However at present, I am laying off the heavy bag and quick-load workout activities, until my lipid profile improves as well as C-Score.
Thanks again.
Fingers Crossed that I will cope well.
You're welcome! My fingers crossed also for you! :)
I don't like to talk about negatives, but are you aware that statins can cause muscle problems? Also does your Dr have you go in for labs every few months?
Hi Thanks for your interest.
I am well aware about the issues with statins and myopathy.
Again, I just started back on them after about 9+ months off altogether. So I will probably go again for lipid panel in about a month.
As for the muscle issues... fingers crossed... I will hope that I am not one who suffers substantial problem with this stuff. But at any rate, at age 59 with three small children, I have to buy time with the statins until I can get my lipids and C-Score down.
Then I will hope to maintain with whatever diet I need to.
Main point now is to check the growth/development of heart disease by any and all means... Otherwise I would not get near a statin.
I had a good friend die recently... 50 years old. Marathon runner. It woke me up. I just have to stay alive as long as I can to raise my kids--10, 6 and 2 years!
I will be watching out closely for the muscle issues. No heavy loading for now, just maintenance cardio. Lots of walking.
Thanks
B Clay
Take care and be safe :)
