My mom has started taking Atarax in place of Valium. Do they work basically the same or does one seem to be sronger than the other? She was on10mg Valium. I'm not sure what mg of the Atarax she is on. Also, how does the Atarax compare to xanax?

Doctors are finally beginning to realize that you can't give patients benzodiazapines month after month and year after year. All that happens is you create a benzodiazapine addict that can actually kill you if you don't ween off it properly. These drugs were never meant for long term use and were marketed for acute anxiety attacks.
Atarax is a antihistamine that is used to control anxiety, it is not addictive and should do a fine job for your Mom. Xanax is another benzodiazapine that is designed to work quickly and for a short time. It is not a good drug for long term anxiety issues as the patient develops to high a tolerance which usually leads to narcotic blackouts. So this is a good drug for your Mom to be on. Give it a couple weeks to work as her body chemistry may have to change from the use of the benzo's... Dave
