im taking 1.5mg of xanax for x1year.6 months
Many times a patient will be started on diazepam (Valium) to slowly reduce dependency on alprazalam (Xanax). By gradually increasing diazepam, which is a long acting benzodiazepine, while decreasing xanax, a short acting benzodiazepine and more highly addictive the withdrawal symptoms will be greatly reduced. As xanax is decreased Valium is increased, basically exchanging one dependency for another. Once xanax has been totally replaced with valium the dosage of valium can be slowly decreased. Withdrawal from valium has less side effects and can finally be stopped ending addiction to benzodiazepines. If due to continued side effects this cannot be accomplished an antidepressant which helps with anxiety may be introduced.
