This question has also been asked and answered here: Oxycodone vs OxyContin - What's the difference?
Oxycodone has acetaminophen in it. Oxycontin does not. That is the only difference between the two. Unfortunately your friend over dosed on it because your friend took too much. If it's prescribed for you, you must have pretty bad pain. As with any opiate pain reliever, there is always a risk of over dosing if you take too many. Oxycodone is a relatively safe pain medication for short term use. I'm sorry about your friend. Maybe you could request to be put on a different pain medication. Good luck to you and hope you get a handle on your pain.
Yes it is the same drug. The only difference is Oxycontin is timed release. Contin meaning continuous release. Thats all. Oxycontin is Oxycodone thats extended release. Most of the time time Oxycodone is prescribed with Acetaminophen and is then called Percocet or several other names depending on the brand. But you can only get Oxycodone up to a certain dosage ( I think its 30mg). Oxycontin goes up to 160mg or higher. (thats the highest Ive seen) So its easier to overdose on Oxycontin because of the high available doses but its still the same drug. Hope this helps
