I was started on Celexa at 10 mg for a month and then I was still having issues, so he upped me to 20 mg three days ago.
I had very minimal success with celexa... I was taking it 40mg twice a day in combination with 2mg of xanax 3 times a day. I just was not happy with the results from the celexa so my doctor swapped me to zoloft in combination with the xanax and it seems to be much more effective for me. but I know that a lot of people don't tolerate zoloft to well... but I haven't had any negative side effects personally
This medication was working a bit for me and my PTSD, but not really well so my dr increased the dose a few times (started at 10, then 20, then 40, and VERY briefly 60mg) but I had a bad reaction when I got to the higher doses of having increased anxiety, suicidal thoughts, I just felt really crappy! So my dr switched me to Luvox (a med that I was on a loooong time ago) it's not the best because it is quite sedating, and has some sexual side effects (but when you're in my position that doesn't matter... I just need to feel human) and this med-in the past-stopped my night terrors! Which is a huge plus! So basically, I think the med you are on is GREAT, it works really well for a lot of ppl. BUT, if you decide it is NOT for you, there are still a lot of great options out there. Good luck! Med changes are rough!
The thing that is being overlooked when treating PTSD is: we are dealing with three neurotransmitters that are out of balance. Celexa is a serotonin reuptake inhibitor only, it's not enough. Norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor as well as dopamine same, as well as dealing with serotonin. All of these need to be addressed, not just one with some xanax thrown in for good measure. Venlafaxine gave me myself back, and gave my husband his life back. Please talk to a psychiatric NP. Best wishes to us all!
