Due to gastric bypass I can't take extended release pills and am looking into talking to my doc about new drugs to take for serious pain problems Level 8-10 most days without medication. I'm currently researching Opana, Dilaudid and Morphine and wondering if anyone here has taken any of these which they would reccommend? I've tried the pain patch (butrans) it doesn't work plus I don't like the limitations of it. I was on Methadone for several years until it stopped working for me :( so that's no longer an option either. Any advise as to what would be a great daily pain medication as well as a rescue pain med would be great! Thanks!
All three meds maybe options. Just wanted to explain that the Dilaudid (hydromorphone) and the Opana (oxymorphone) which is stonger than the Diluadid, are both morphine like medications which come in immediate release formulas. My sister takes Opana for her fibro with good results though she did find she responds better to the extended release as opposed to the immediate release formula.
Just curious, why does the gastric bypass exclude the use of extended release formulas?
I would think in your situation the Fentanyl patch would do well. It has a variety of strengths so you can increase by as little as 12 mcgs and it doesnt go through the GI tract at all. I was on it for some 11-12 years until my pain surpassed the limit my dr was willing to prescribe for and I liked it a lot. Very easy to remember and was always working. Hope you find an avenue to get the pain control you need.
I take Opana ER and it stopped working as well as it was, so my pain management doctor put me on Exalgo ER. That did not work very well, unless I did not give it enough time. So, anyway he put me back on Opana ER. I think my system is getting just to accustomed to the opana and my pain is bad. I have a bone disease and I just need something thay works. It is just too expensive to keep changing meds. but if you have never taken opana I would give it a try, like I said it worked a long time for me.
