I have been siezure free for over 12 years. The drug Tegretol is no longer being produced. The generic is only offered. Is it safe to switch?
Not sure where you are located. We still get the brand name tegretol here in Alberta, Canada. Don't know for how much longer though as it has to be cost effective for drug companies. When the generic came out we found a slight increase in seizures for my daugther and weren't sure why. Then we found some studies which said the drug is the same but the binders can be different which is why some people may find the drug does not work exactly the same We switched back to the brand name but do have to pay extra beyond the drug plan. We have found tegretol to be her most effective drug. Other drugs being taken with the tegretol were generic when added to the prescribed medication and the main thing we have learned is pharamicies can shop around and buy from different drug companies. If possible try to see if they are using the same supplier each time. Not much we can do sometimes, but there have been clinical studies that show there can be some variations even between generics. Fortunately this does not affect most patients. You might find some info about this online. I did this research a few years back so don't have it readily available for you. This has been an interesting area of research and discussion and doctors have varying opinions. In my opinion, it sure would be worth a try using the generic tregretol rather than going though the trails of a another drug. Best wishes
