I am parent to a teenager with a severe form of delayed sleep phase syndrome which has totally disrupted his life and resulted in him having to leave f/t education a couple of years ago. He is unable to fall asleep until at least 7am so misses most of the day and is depressed as a consequence. Melatonin and attempts at changes in sleep patterns (recommended by CAMHS) have failed. Am wondering if this drug may help with the sleep and associated depression and enable him to regain a normal (happy) life. Any experience of this out there?
Mirtazipine, a tetracyclic antidepressant, is a good choice to help with depression and sleep disorder. I recommend he takes at the same time every evening. It will most likely make him sleepy and if he rests through the night should feel ok the next day. Give this medication time to work as far as his symptoms. May take several weeks to reach peak effect on the depression.
