I am on my fifth week taking Savella and I am finding it increasingly hard to sleep. Has anyone else experienced this? I fall asleep fine, but can't seem to stay asleep - waking up all night long (not sleep apnea - I have been tested for that). Thanks for your help!
I'm only on my fifth day of the starter pack. After my first full day on it, I knew I had to take the second dose earlier. The first day I took it at dinner time. Even on my normal dose of Ambien, I had a very hard time falling asleep. Time will tell how it effects my sleep as I continue to titrate up.
For me, it actually *helped* me sleep. I've been on every sleep aid you could possibly come up with, including the aforementioned Ambien, and I was on it for longer than a year.
At any rate, the Savella sort of calmed my mind from racing and worrying. Maybe a placebo effect? I don't know. But that was my experience with it.
I've just been on Savella about a week (trial pack), and it is helping me with my back (herniated discs). I have noticed that I only sleep 4-5 hours though since starting it. I take a muscle relaxer at night, and 1-2 Darvocets during the day. I'm also on Effexor for anxiety. Has anyone tried using Melatonin to help you sleep? My son was prescribed this by his doctor, although you can buy it without a prescription. I don't have trouble falling to sleep, but since taking the Savella, I wake up after about 4-5 hours. I don't feel tired though... in fact, I feel pretty energized. Before taking Savella, I was exhausted and in pain with my back and legs a LOT. So far, Savella has really helped me with the pain I was having, and feeling tired all the time. I'd hate to be without it!! Good luck to everyone!! :-)
I am on my second day of Savella and can't sleep. I do take Ambien 5 mg once or twice a week prior to Savella but have not tried taking it yet. I am considering trying Melatonin since it is natural. Maybe try melatonin if you are scared to try Ambien. Everyone reacts differently. I just hope the Savella will be the drug to give me a normal life again with energy. If this doesn't work, I give up!
I am on my 6th day of Savella (dr. sample kit). The first night, I actually had a full night's sleep for the first time in years and was so happy. Since then, I have had little sleep. I am so tired it's hard to tell if the medication is working or not. I also take Effexor, clonazepam (1 mg at bedtime), and morphine IR. I may be noticing a bit of pain relief and am trying to hold on longer than usual since this is my only option right now. Has anyone tried Benadryl at bedtime? If so, did it help? That's what I plan on doing tonight. Yesterday I took the second dose of Savella at lunch time to see if I would sleep any better. Didn't work!
It seems like several of you have just started using Savella (probably because it was just approved by the FDA in Jan 2010). I have been on it about 4 months now. The side effects at first (insomnia, nausea, shaking hands, etc) do go away eventually you just have to hang in there about 3-4 weeks. I did have trouble with insomnia as the main side effect. My doctor put me on 50mg of imipramine. It's an old antidepressant that they actually use for children a lot (mainly to stop wetting the bed). It is also good for headaches. It has helped me sleep. I take it right before bed. I have also started taking the second (50mg) of Savella at around 5:00 or 6:00 each evening instead of right before bed. That has really helped a lot too. If you can just hang in there with the side effects I promise that most of you will love it as far as helping with your fibro aches and pains.
I know not everyone responds the same to meds so I'm sure there are some out there who won't be able to take it and will disagree with me 100%. Each person is different.
I have always had insomnia, so I don't know if the Savella affected it or not. However, I was unable to function due to chronic fatigue and fibermyalgia. The doctor put me on Savella and Provigil (a stimulant and used mainly for sleep disorders). I take 1/2 of a generic ambien to get me to sleep and only occasionally have problems getting back to sleep when I wake up.
You might want to ask your doctor if taking 1/2 or 1/3 or whatever if you have 4 or more hours before you get up would be okay when you wake during the night and can't go back to sleep. If you have less than 4 hours to go, you should probably be getting enough sleep to get by for a day. My life is so much better, I would hate to give up the Savella.
