I have read that tinnitus is a condition where signals to the brain re-create noises wrongly so wondered if gabapentin could block the signals.
I take gabapentin for both TMJD and tinnitus. For me, these two ear-related problems have gone together for 10+ yrs., though I've only been on gabapentin now for ~9 mos. The gabapentin is very helpful for pain. I think it helps me sleep even when tinnitus is at its loudest, whereas without it I used to have to drop from exhaustion before I could sleep. I also was previously on a controlled substance for sleep and gabapentin is currently not considered a controlled substance in U.S.
Hi Tracey8. Well that's a new one to me. I can't believe how the doctors keep prescribing these types of medications for new illnesses. This really scares me. The main problem with taking Gabapentin for tinnitus is that that's one of the side effects. Just one of the many horrible side effects. I am not saying that your experience will be the same nightmare that I had; but please do as much research as you can. I wish someone would have warned me. Please take care and best wishes to you.
I haven't been prescribed this. My partner has tinnitus and its really stressing him out. I took gabapentin for neurological pain some years ago and it was amazing. I just wondered if it could work for other conditions. But I guess it works for pain but not other brain signals then?
I have been on gab. for 2 years and it has not helped my tinnitus at all.
