The doc is totally re-doing my pain meds. I'm going from taking Tramadol 400mg a day and Hydrocodone 30mg a day to Butrans ONLY. I'm worried about what this will do.
Hi Jenail, I am on the 10 mcg Butrans patch. This will be my second month. I am trying to take as low a dosage as possible. I do feel some relief, and actually I feel better not taking the Hydrocodone everyday. I do not feel that need to wait for my next dose of Hydrocodone. I hope you like the Butrans patch too.
What dose of Butran are they starting you on? From what I've read they usually start you out with something for breakthrough pain until they know what dose will work for you, but every doctor is different. I just started on the Butrans patch 5 mcg a few weeks ago myself. I have not had any adverse effects. I did not have any type of withdrawals which I was worried about. I did continue to take my Norco for breakthrough pain though. I am hoping they adjust my Butran dose up so I can be done with all the pills. I also noticed this medicine improved my mood. I know one of it's off label uses if for depression. I don't know if it is helping on that level or just having better pain control has improved my mood. I don't have the ups and downs all day that you do with pills because it maintains a steady state in your blood. There is no euphoric effect but it just evens out the mood because your pain levels don't fluctuate.
So far I am very impressed with this medication, it has really made a big difference for me within a few days of starting it. Best of luck to you! Let me know how it is going.
Butrans is a narcotic patch to answer one question. I've started taking the 5 mcg patch and lortab 7.5x2 for breakthrough pain. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be helping much. Perhaps the dose is too low. I've also noticed that it doesn't seem to last the full 7 days, usually wearing off after the 4th. This has been a common complaint I've noticed in comments in the Butrans support group. I'm definitely going to talk to my pm dr about upping the dose of the patch and the number of lortabs for breakthrough. Please keep me updated on your progress. Feel free to add me as a friend if you'd like and we can chat.
I'm on Butrans and at first it took a day to actually work to it's fullest and then it only works for about 4 days, I only get 4 days out of 7 days. I don't like to change to a new patch until the 7 days are up because then I will run out and have nothing until the full 28 days are up before I can get a refill for the next month of patches. My Dr prescribed me Tylenol 3 for break thru pain and the days at the when it starts to wear off if needed, but the pharmacy refused to fill it and called the Dr and told him he will get in trouble for prescribing both so I only get patches. I told them that I read all over the place that people get break thru meds all the time with this and they are usually stronger than the T3, but she basically called me a liar and said it's not true it doesn't happen.
I stuck with the Butrans tho because they are better than having to pop pills all the time to get relief especially when I wake up in the mornings I don't have pain and I don't have to take a pill and wait for it to work before I can continue on my day. I can just get up and go on the good days. The good days out weigh the few bad I get at the end of each patch. Good luck.
