medication. He started about a month ago on the lowest dose and hasn't changed one way or the other. He was taken off 60mg of Paxil, and he also takes zyprexa before bed. They have tried Abilify etc. and nothing seems to help that much.
I haven't heard of Brintellix. Paxil is considered an SSRI antidepressant. If none of these SSRI antidepressants is helping him, then he should maybe talk o his dr. about taking tricyclic antidepressants, such as imipramine or Elavil. these antidepressants are very good for depression. Im on imipramine and have been for over 30 yrs. Also, these antidepressants are good for anxiety and can help you to fall asleep faster. If his depression doesn't get better, then lithium can be added to the tricyclic meds with great improvement for depression. Ive studied books on this subject, and lithium is a mood stabilizer. Im bipolar, and take lithium, but people with just depression can improve considerably with tricyclics and lithium. I hope he will get better, soon! But, I would definitely talk to his dr. about tricyclic anitdepressants.
I have been on Brintillex for about a month and a half so far. Started at 5 mg, now on 10 mg.
What little I can tell you is that Brintillex is a new type of SSRi that works on several different types of serotonin. This is is unusual and it seems to be helping me. I have have been suffering from depression for 51 years. I have been on a lot of different drugs. I cannot say how well this one works, but so far, it has evened things out.
Listen to you doc, and you should be fine.
I have just started Brintellix 10mg one week ago. Having been taking Effexor xr 150mg. for MANY years (and I would never recommend this drug as it's withdrawal is pure Hell) I am still suffering the withdrawal of E it's difficult to determine the effects of B. However, I'm very hopeful for this new drug as I too suffer Major Depression and am treatment resistant. The Brintellix had some nasty GI side effects but other than that... not so much. It's good to hear from someone else experiencing the same new drug... there isn't a lot of info out there. Please keep us posted. I would have thought they would have upped the dosage to 20mg. by now... and I would have thought there should have been an improvement n his mood at a months length of time.
