My son recently went through detox - prior to that he was snorting 5 or 6 30 mg. oxycontin's a day for about 2 1/2 years. He got out of detox 2 1/2 weeks ago and so far is 3 weeks clean. However, he is having a lot of problems with anxiety, stating his mind won't "slow down." He is having depression also. Are there any over-the-counter supplements that can help? We have read about 5-HTP and L Tyrosine. Has anybody tried these for the anxiety and depression after detox?
I believe he will need some medications for depression and anxiety. Google PAWS. I am going through it. It is post acute withdrawal syndrome. I feel for you both. It is very rough to face the world without the narcotics. God Bless and Good Luck. Pattie. I added you as a friend if you want to chat privately.
I personally don't know of any OTC med to help with his anxiety but there are prescription meds that can help. I would imagine that given his history you are a little skittish when it comes to things like Xanax and Ativan for anxiety. My suggestion would be to get him into therapy with a psychologist or psychiatrist. They can evaluate if he needs meds and answer all your questions you may have. If you are unsure about using prescription meds the doctor can still help him develop the tools necessary to push through his anxiety and depression. There are relaxation techniques like bio feedback that can really help. On top of that I would ask the doctor if there is a support group for people that are in his same shoes. I joined a group for people living with chronic pain and it helped me tremendously. Even though going into it I thought it was cheesy and a huge joke.
I was sure I would get nothing out of it. I was very wrong. The group helped lessen my depression. It made me get out of the house. Talking to people that are going through the same thing I am, helped me to shift my focus from all of my problems to helping others. If he isn't open to group therapy or you don't have money for it, he could try a 12 step program. Talking things out is a good way to ease some of that anxiety and depression.
I know this isn't an exact answer to your question, but I hoped it helped anyway.
