Hello. My biggest fear is seeing a psychiatrist and being put on all sorts of pills in the name of helping my anxiety. Id like to just get honest and appropriate treatment but I've seen so many of my loved ones and friends be put in a zombie like state of living that Im fearful that will happen to me too... what can i do?
You are in control. Your psychiatrist should listen to you and be able to explain your treatment plan. If something worries you or you don't understand what your psychiatrist ask. Just like any other doctor you must form a trust with this person before they can help you achieve your goals. If you don't feel that you have made a connection, there are plenty more psychiatrists out there. Bottom line you are in control, no one can make you take or do something you don't want. Good Luck.
I went through that as a teenager. It may take awhile to find the one or two medications that work for you, but be patient. If the Dr. tries to push multipule med's, refuse them, get a second opinion, and find a Dr that honestly cares about you and not about the $ they make by pushing the scripts...
I understand your Anxiety wholeheartedly. It is very scary going to a psychiatrist. You don't know what they are going to say or think about you, you don't know what they are going to prescribe, they are expensive and of course, there is always the stigma attached when a person goes to see one or goes to counseling. People with Depression or Anxiety in this country are not looked upon in a favorable light. At least, that is how I personally feel. I have seen the mentally ill discriminated against.
But as one person told you, you are in control through this whole process. Take your time to find a doctor that you are comfortable with. Don't take any prescriptions that you are not willing or hesitant to try. But bear in mind that it usually takes a few tries to find the right combos of meds or med that works just the right way. So if you are prescribed something, be patient. Only you have the power to say NO. There are so many good drugs out there, I am sure you will find something that can help you. Hang in there. I hope you feel better soon.
You will do fine. I'm the one that gets intimidated by them... I still do after 9 years but it's got better. I hate it because you know how we are treated as "crazy." But I have to realize that these people are there for the same reason as you are. Right? I get nervous just sitting there in the waiting room with all these people. That office has NO new magazines... they have the same one's they had the old office! I took some new magaines I had set off the side for them. It helps the nervousiness.
Hang in there you will do fine.
