Hi, in the UK dentists commonly use Metronidazole. It has proven to be very effective. It is essential you don't drink any alcohol whilst taking them though!
It is essential to see a dentist who can determine the cause of the abscess. I have had this happen under a crown. They can linger for a long time before one notices and cause the underlying bone to honeycomb and be destroyed. Here we use amoxicillin if one can take it.
