I have bipolar disorder I and PMDD. I take birth control pills without placebos ever. I recently had a bunch of MRSA lesions and was put on minocycline for 3 months. I've been on the antibiotics for a couple wks and I'm having breakthrough bleeding, endometriosis cramps, hot flashes and worst of all, anxiety and depression increase. Mostly depression. I feel nauseous and fatigued all the time. My docs know about this and there doesn't seem to be anything they can do about the side effects of antibiotics. I've tried a bunch of different antibiotics and they all cause the same problems. I take Zofran sometimes. I'm thinking of asking my OBGYN if there's a stronger birth control dosage (I know there is a higher dosed pill of the same brand I take) that I could use until I'm off the minocycline. Anybody been through or know about this sort of problem?
Do antibiotics effect the birth control used for my PMDD?

They did culture it and it showed, 'heavy growth of methicillin, etc.'. I don't know if that's what you mean't about culture and sensitivity. My lesions this year were treated with doxycyline because Bactrim gave me severe mood swings. The infect dz doc said the doxy wouldn't be strong enough to help a 'weeping wound'. That's why she did the whole 3 month long thing. I also use hibicleanse 1 week out of every month and bactroban in my nose. Accupuncture helped I think. Hard to know with everything else going on. I'm curious of your opinion though since you are a microbiologist. I'm wondering what all this is doing to my immune system. I know you aren't a doc, but you're still more educated than I am. :)
I have never had the symptoms you are describing Sunflower, how awful for you. I just wanted to add, you do know BCP's are ineffective whilst on antibiotics, so if you ever feel like having sex, please use barrier type contraceptives. I can hardly imagine what you are going through. Being bipolar also, this situation must be really stressing. I'm bipolar also.
Please take care. I will be sending prayers your way.
Peace and good health,
