I am currently taking doxycyline hydrate for a cough and mononessa for birth control. I will finish my antibiotic three-two days prior to my placebo week. Once I finish, is it safe to start having sex at the beginning of my cycle without another method of protection since it will have been a week since I stopped taking the antibiotic?
Mary it does decrease the effect of birth control to be safe if your off the pill and on the placebo for the first 7 days use a back up plan with the new packet just as extra precaution Hope you are feeling better and just better to be safe than sorry.Once your off the antibiotic and have been on 7 days of the new packet they well be as effective as normal. doxycycline ethinyl estradiol
Applies to: doxycycline, Mononessa (ethinyl estradiol / norgestimate)
Antibiotics such as doxycycline may reduce the effects of ethinyl estradiol in some women. If you are using ethinyl estradiol for birth control, you may be at increased risk for pregnancy or breakthrough bleeding. Talk to your healthcare provider to determine if you should use an alternative or additional form of birth controlduring treatment with doxycycline. In addition, some birth control preparations may include "placebo" non-hormonal pills that contain iron. If you are taking these iron pills during treatment with doxycycline, you should separate the dosing times by several hours so that the iron does not interfere with absorption of the antibiotic. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for information on when best to take these medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
