My psychiatrist tells me i might as well not be taking them if i drink regularly. Is that completely true? Would you really get no benefit from them at all?
I'm not sure if you get no benefit from your meds if you have the occasional drink, but i do know that when i used to go out on a night drinking-i would suffer for days after, the alcohol would add to my depression and make my anxiety worse. While on the night out,i would be in great form, but the days that followed just were not worth it so i dont bother anymore.
That is the downsides to taking anti d's i'm afraid,it effects me in that way anyway.
Hope this helps
Unfortunately alcohol is a depressant. I know it doesn't seem like it at the time, but the after effects is depression. So while the alcohol doesn't necessary make the antidepressant ineffective, the alcohol does increase the symptoms making the drug well, less effective. I have taken antidepressants for years and years, I am an old fart, and had to stop drinking because it just didn't help the depression. I have to admit I occassionally have a drink but have learned that ordering a non alcoholic beverage is in my best interest. It comes second nature now and I still have fun when I go out. My friends are use to me not drinking and actually would prefer it that way. Changing our habits can be difficult but this is one that is in our best interest.
It is not so much as the meds will be ineffective, it is just that the alcohol is SO damaging to your mental health. Drinking is not a healthy behavior especially binge drinking. Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant, plain and simple so if you do continue to drink you are really negating any effects of your antidepressants. It is almost like taking an antidote.
You didn't say how much you drink. I've been a 5 to 6 drinks a day drinker all of my life. My doctor(MD) strongly recommends that i continue to cut down which I have been trying to do. How much does the booze have to do with your daily life? The meds do help somewhat but I have realized if I want to work on my depression I have to get the alcohol out of my system. It's a battle I wish you the best. I take wellbutrin and abilify currently. That combo is working for now.
