If so, how many cigarettes per day would have an impact on the therapeutic effects of the medication? I smoke 5-8 per day, and am currently on 60mgs.

Yes. Plasma levels of anafranil in smokers appear to be lower than in non-smokers. This may mean you may have to take a higher dose of anafranil to reach a therapeutic effect.
It is hard to know how many cigarettes one needs before plasma levels are affected and only careful blood monitoring would be able to determine this. My best suggestion is if you are feeling "well controlled" now try to keep the number of cigarettes you smoke constant.
Talk to your doctor if you are not feeling "well controlled". Good luck.
