I started taking it yesterday for a sore throat and I’m noticing a lot more pain and white spots.. is that normal?
It's too early to feel improvement. It’s usually the third day before you start to feel relief and the fever goes away. I assume you had a throat culture?
If so, it’s completed in 48 hours and the doctor will notify you if the antibiotic needs to be changed.
The white spots (lay term-“stones”) in your tonsils is what is making the pain worse. I assume you have your tonsils. Right? The tonsils have crevices, cavities, tunnels called crypts.
These get filled with white blood cells, mucous, food and other debris. Bacteria and fungi feed off it and cause the foul odor.
They become hardened and calcified. They may be as little as rice or as large as a small grape. The only symptom you may have is annoying, embarrassing bad breath most of the time.
Once there is an infection, you may have the white spots as you described. Infections are seen with increase in white blood cells therefore, they become larger. They are caused by :
- Large tonsils with crevices (most often).
- Poor oral hygiene.
- Chronic sinusitis.
- Chronic tonsillitis.
The symptoms are of tonsil stones :
- Bad breath
- Sore throat
- Trouble swallowing
- Large tonsils
- Chronic cough
- White or yellow spots
These are rare except for deep infections (abscess).
- Good oral hygiene by cleaning the back of your tongue when you brush especially before bed.
- Gargling vigorously with salt water may help dislodge the stone and decrease the odor.
Dissolve 1/2 tsp of salt in 8oz of warm water.
- Increase fluid intake.
- Stop smoking.
You may first find one when coughing vigorously will dislodge it.
The cough squeezes the tonsils and forces them out. It’s similar to squeezing a zit. Lol...
FYI ... if you want to get a better idea of the odor, crush it between your fingers and sniff.
The smell is very distinctive and may encourage you to focus on prevention.
Another way to try and rid yourself of the existing ones is to use an object to remove them. Be very careful because the tonsils are very vascular causing easy bleeding.
Try using a water pick
(Most likely won’t work).
Cotton swab to push around it.
The squeezing as with coughing really helps bring them out of the pocket. Try looking in the mirror and squeezing your throat muscles.
A dental pick used very gently may be used to remove the portion visible. Don’t dig! Actually you may start gagging and get the desired squeezing motion.
There are other ways to rid yourself of them if they are particularly troublesome.
If someone wants to know, let me know and I’ll go into it.
So you have 2 problems :
Acute... the infection.
Chronic... the stones.
Remember... the pain is mostly from the stones and tonsillitis.
If you can get the stones out, you will get some relief.
Drink plenty of fluids now and make sure you take the antibiotic exactly on the same time schedule.
